The Indian luxury trains have a chequered history. Indian maharajas took a strong liking to these machines ever since the first creation of James Watt. There is a long list of Maharajas who were noted for their fascination for luxury trains. Maharaja Gaekwad of Vadodara, Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Jodhpur, Madhav Rao Scindia, Nizams of Hyderabad and Maharaja of Gwalior were all noted for their fascination for luxury trains.
Maharaja Yaswant Rao of Indore got constructed the most luxurious as well as largest carriage in 1936. It was the largest coach at that time to be built in Britain.
The art deco interiors used sycamore wood, chrome, pink mirrors and an internal telephone system. To make it more comfortable, it also had air blown over ice to keep the carriage cool in the tropical climes.
Maharajas’ Express is latest and the most luxurious addition to the pantheon of Indian luxury trains. The operator of this train is the Royale Indian Rail Tours Ltd. (RITL) a joint venture between ICRTC and Cox and Kings India Limited. It is a 50:50 venture and first of its kind by ICRTC with a private company. The train was launched in March, 2010. It covers four itineraries to some of the royal and celestial destinations of India. Its four itineraries run with one or two departures each month and runs from October to April.
