Deccan Odyssey train embarks on a fabulous journey of Maharashtra and Goa. It starts its 7-day long journey from Mumbai and the destinations traversed by this train are discussed in brief:
Mumbai:
- Mumbai is the starting point of the journey. The tourists will explore the various attractions of the Mumbai city like Gateway of India, Hanging Garden, and Prince of Wales Museum. It is a thriving financial capital of India.
Sindhudurg Ocean Fort & Tarkali Beach
- Deccan Odyssey Train travels through Sindhudurg Ocean Fort as it is part of the tour itinerary. The fort is situated on a rocky island and tells a story of glorious past. The founder of the Maratha kingdom Shivaji built this fort around 1664-67 AD. This was once the naval headquarter of the Maratha Empire. One of the most well preserved forts of Maratha, Sindhudurg Fort can be reached only by a boat ride.
- Tarkarli is a picturesque beach located at the confluence of Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 6 kms away from Malvan. It is called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.
Goa: The Gem of the East
- Goa is located on the west coast of India. It is a former Portuguese colony .Goa is famous for its scenic palm-fringed beaches. Portuguese heritage is still reflected in its old Goa. Deccan Odyssey travels through the North Goa which houses St. Augustine Church once largest cathedral in Goa, Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral and the Church of St. Francis of Assissi, an archaeological museum for Goan antiques.
Goa beaches are famous all over the world; there is always a mood of gaiety and celebration on the beach.
Kolhapur:
- Kolhapur, a former princely state, has many heritage sites. It is also renowned for its tradition of martial arts. Deccan Odyssey traverses destinations like New Palace Museum, Bhavani Mandap and Mahalaxmi Temp. Kolhapur is also known for its jewellery, leather sandals and Kolhapuri chappals, saris, etc.
Daulatabad Fort City & World Heritage Ellora Caves:
- Daulatabad, a 14th century fort city in Maharashtra state is just 16 kms away from Aurangabad. Mohammed bin Tughlak, the Sultan of Delhi annexed the fort and made it his capital renaming it as Daulatabad, or City of Fortune.
- The 34 caves of Ellora have the sculpture of three religions-Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. The caves date back to 5th to 11th century. The major excavation is the magnificent Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), the biggest monolithic structure in the world.
- Bibi-Ka-Muqbara of Aurangabad built by Prince Azam Shah, son of Emperor as a tribute to his mother Rabia Durrani is also an attraction in Aurangabad. It is an imitation of Taj Mahal and hence called as poor man’s Taj.
Chandrapur & Wardha:
- Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is situated 45 km north of Chandrapur. The main attractions of the park are royal Bengal tiger and Sambar, Gaur, Chinkara, Leopard cat, Pangolin, Panther, Spotted deer, Sloth bear, Chausinga, Nilgai, Barking deer, Indian bison, Wild dog, Hyena, Jackals, several species of birds, etc.
- Wardha is famous for Sevagram Ashram where Gandhi stayed from 1936 to 1948.

Ajanta Caves and Nashik (Panchawati):
- Deccan Odyssey journey is on its last with stopovers at Ajanta caves and Nashik. Ajanta Caves are 2nd century BC temples of Buddhist art and sculptures. There are 34 excavated caves in Ajanta which are awesome to explore.
- Panchawati is a sacred Hindu place in Nashik.It is related to stories of Hindu Epic Ramayana. Ram spent some period of his exile here with wife Sita and brother Laxman. Ravana kidnaps Sita from Panchawati. There are numerous temples and it is also famous for Kumbha Mela.
